Der Künstler Haohui Liu über seine Ausstellung:
Manchmal wird behauptet, Skateboarder seien wie Schaben oder Ratten in den modernen Stahldschungelstädten. Aber als Skateboarder und Fotograf finde ich diese Sichtweise nicht zu 100% wahr. Meine Arbeit ist nicht nur der Versuch, die schönen Momente der Skateboarding-Tricks einzufangen, sondern sie soll vor allem dokumentieren und den Spirit vermitteln: Skateboarding ist und wird niemals irgendeine Sportart sein. Skateboarding ist ein Lebensstil! Man kann sagen, dass ich in diesem Punkt selbstsüchtig bin, denn mein Hauptziel ist es, mehr Leute über das Skateboarding aufzuklären. Mit meinen Fotografien möchte ich den Menschen diese fabelhafte Kultur näherbringen. Mit großem Stolz kann ich sagen, dass Skateboarding das Beste ist, was mir je passiert ist (vielleicht neben der Fotografie) und ich wünsche mir, dass Sie dieses Gefühl nachempfinden können.
Eine weitere Idee hinter meiner Arbeit ist, dass keine perfekte Umgebung benötigt wird, um etwas Tolles zu erreichen. Sie brauchen keine perfekte Marmorleiste, um einen ‚Nosegrind‘ zu machen und Sie brauchen auch keine Metropole im Hintergrund, um gelungene Fotografien von Menschen zu machen. Es gab Zeiten, in denen ich Shanghai für die perfekten Skate-Spots oder NYC für die Spontaneität. Aber im Laufe der Jahre habe ich erkannt, dass es eine faule Ausrede ist. ‚The grass is not always greener on the other side.’

People sometimes say that skateboarders are like cockroaches or rats in modern steel jungle cities. But as a skateboarder and photographer, I don't find it 100% true. My work is not just an attempt to capture the beautiful moments of skateboarding tricks, but above all to document and convey the spirit: Skateboarding is not, and will never be just a sport. Skateboarding is a lifestyle. You could say I'm selfish in this respect, because my main goal is to tell more people about skateboarding. With my photographs I want to bring people closer to this culture. With great pride I can say that skateboarding is the best thing that has ever happened to me (maybe besides photography) and I wish you can relate to this feeling.
Another idea behind my work is that you don't need a perfect environment to achieve something great. You don't need a perfect marble ledge to do a nosegrind and you don't need a metropolis in the background to make successful photographs of people. There were times when I envied Shanghai for its perfect skate spots or NYC for its spontaneity. But over the years I've realised that it's a lame excuse. “The grass is not always greener on the other side.”
